Since my first encounter with the GNU/Linux Operation System my senior year of high school I've been a huge fan. Here I'll describe why I like the system, the positives and negatives, and little tips and tricks I've put together over the years.
moblock Packages for AMD64 Debian

Recently my buddy Chris told me about moblock and how it's the PeerGuardian equivalant for GNU/Linux. Unfortunately running Debian Sarge on an AMD64 has issues with finding properly built packages.

A couple months ago I bought a Streamzap PC Remote from Frys to use with my MythTV setup on Debian Sarge unfortunately it did't work out of the box, but after finagling with the lirc sources I eventually got it to work. Below are the steps I took.

I love using mythtv as a DVR and media player, but when trying to update my Debian sarge machine to the latest version the dependencies just became to high and eventually they uninstalled themselves. Instead of dealing with these issues with every new release I took the mythtv sources from Matt Zimmerman and compiled them for sarge, both for i386 (32bit) and amd64 (64bit).

Anyone with an ounce of computer knowledge knows the drill of helping out family members and friends with computer problems. Although this is a nice gesture to do, normally it's the same thing you do at work, and wouldn't you rather be spending time with your family instead of feeling like you're on the clock again? My solution for this: Install Debian GNU/Linux on my parents machine. It turned out very nicely and the end result is very similiar to my Debian Desktop.

Since my freshman year in college I've used GNU/Linux as a desktop, first starting out with Redhat 6.1 and eventually moving to pure Debian.
